Elly Dobbs, Others Retire from State House
Numerous retirements were announced yesterday at the Georgia House of Representatives.
State Rep. Elly Dobbs (D-Atlanta) had been redistricted into a district with State Rep. Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta), which would have forced the two to run against each other.
State Rep. Sistie Hudson (D-Sparta), who had been redistricted into a district with State Rep. Mack Jackson (D-Sandersville), also announced her resignation. Hudson is running for the Board of Commissioners of Hancock County.
As previously reported by Atlanta Progressive News, State Rep. Stephanie Benfield (D-Decatur), who had been redistricted to run against State Rep. Howard Mosby (D-Atlanta), has also announced her resignation. Benfield is going to work as the new Executive Director of GreenLaw.
In addition, State Rep. Roberta Abdul-Salaam (D-Clayton) has announced her resignation. She is challenging Eldrin Bell, Chairman of Clayton County.
State Rep. Joe Heckstall (D-East Point) also announced his resignation.
State Rep. Roger Lane (R-Darien) is among several Republicans who are resigning. Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed Lane a Superior Court Judge in the Brunswick Judicial Curcuit. Lane is replacing former Chief Judge Amanda Williams, who resigned in the face of an ethics investigation by the Judicial Qualifications Commission.
